The Single Traveller – Fun Things and Groups to Join as a Single Traveller

Dublin is a place valued for its historical significance, the picturesque Georgian buildings and most importantly the craic! No matter where you are in the city, you’ll find a great selection of bars, pubs and venues, complete with live music and pints of The Black Stuff. The fact that Dublin is a compact, walkable city and the friendly vibe from the native Irish make Dublin an excellent place to come alone. Dublin is a great place to find your feet and dip your toe into the world of solo travelling. Here are some of our top tips for solo travellers to Dublin

Value Accommodation

Single travellers need a specific type of accommodation, different to families and couples. You’re looking for somewhere safe, reasonably quiet, easy to get to and budget-friendly, considering you won’t be spending much time there. DCU Rooms is an ideal base for all types of traveller but especially suited to the no-frills soloist. We offer budget accommodation, offering much better value than an expensive Dublin hotel. We are easily reachable by public transport from both the airport and the city and have many excellent facilities on-site, such as a gym & swimming pool, a bar, restaurants & café and offer free Wi-Fi throughout the campus.

Pub Culture

While Dublin is often seen as a party destination, we actually have a great variety of pubs to choose from meaning you can plan what kind of night you want to have. If you want to join hundreds of travellers, singing trad music and drinking plenty, Temple Bar is the place for you. You’re sure to meet some like minded solos looking to continue the party. If you’d prefer a quiet pint, visit a neighbourhood pub. Bring a newspaper or chat to locals propping up the bar. Ask any local for an ‘old man pub’ and they’ll know exactly what you’re looking for!

Dublin Walking Tours

If the idea of a few lonesome pints doesn’t appeal to you, why not sign up for one of the many free walking tours that take place across the city every day. A walking tour is a great way to give you the lay of the land and a good idea where you want to return to learn about in more depth. Many walking tours taking you across the city from north to south, telling you all about the political and social history of the city with some fun facts thrown in. You might even decide to go on a specialised tour, specifically learning about our literary history, our brewing history or a foodie tour. It’s also a great way to meet fellow solo travellers and if you click you might continue exploring together.

Dublin’s Great Outdoors

If you love the great outdoors or want to stay active on your trip to Dublin, you’ll want to visit some of Dublin’s many green spaces. These include a wonderful Victorian Park in the centre of the city – Stephens Green, Dublin’s largest walled park – Phoenix Park, and the many green spaces on Dublin’s North Side, including our very own Albert College Park. One of the best things about Dublin is our proximity to both the sea and the mountains, both of which are easily accessible by public transport. Hop on a Dart to Poolbeg Lighthouse, Dublin Bay or enjoy a gorgeous cliffside walk in Howth.

Dublin’s Museums

The best way to get to know a city is to learn some of the history. In Dublin, the easiest and cheapest way to do that is to visit some of the fascinating museums dotted across the city. They vary in content from science & technology to archaeology & natural history and cover many interesting topics in depth. The best thing about travelling solo is keeping your own time. You are not tied to anyone else’s schedule or dining habits. If you like a place, spend some extra time there, if not, you can leave as soon as you want. Join a guided tour in any of the museums if you’d like to discuss your thoughts with peers or learn more.
