Christmas Festivities In Dublin

Christmas in Dublin

Dublin comes alive in the winter. We have beautiful architecture, excellent shopping and a friendly welcoming nightlife scene all year round and everything is elevated with the addition of Christmas festivities. There are Christmas markets to look forward to as well as winter walks, ice skating, festive theatre and so much more. We’re expecting a busy Christmas season in Dublin, as always, so we advise guests who are planning a trip to book soon to avoid disappointment. Christmas Markets in Dublin

Dublin has one main Christmas market which is making a much-anticipated return this year. The Dublin Castle Christmas market is a highlight of the festive calendar in Dublin and this year it’s free to enter and no booking is required. Held in the magnificent surroundings of Dublin Castle in the heart of the city, the market is home to a couple of dozen local independent vendors selling their artisan wares. There will be festive surprises like choirs, performances and carol singing as well as a traditional carousel. There are always plenty of opportunities to sample some festive food and drink and to warm up afterwards with a beverage in a nearby pub. Christmas at the Castle runs from Wednesday, 6 December 2023 until Tuesday, 19 December 2023.

Ice Skating in Dublin

For a couple of years, Dublin has been missing one important ingredient for a perfect Christmas; ice skating. We’re delighted to see the return of this festive sport to Blanchardstown, Dundrum, and Dun Laoghaire in Dublin. If you have a Christmas fantasy of holding hands with the one you love, skating under a twinkling canopy, this is your dream come true. All rinks are covered so they can be enjoyed rain, hail or shine. Practice your pirouette or just practice staying upright on a real ice rink. It’s a great activity for all ages. You can also watch from the sidelines, watching the skaters in action. Use public transport links from our accommodation in Dublin to get where you’re going fast. Our team will be happy to give you directions.

Panto in Dublin

Panto in Dublin has been a tradition for decades and one that gets better every year. We’re spoiled for choice in the capital with everything from big-budget productions to small, community theatres right on our doorstep. The most important panto for us this year is the wonderful production of Treasure Island, based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. Promising the bigger and better twists, turns, adventure and hilarity, we’re looking forward to welcoming the cast and crew to The Helix from 24 November 2023 to 14 January 2024. Other great shows in Dublin include;

  • Rapunzel in Liberty Halls from December 18th to 31st
  • Cinderella in Gaiety Theatre from November 26th to January 7th
  • Treasure Island in The Helix from November 24th to January 14th
  • Sammy Buffy and the Beanstalk at the National Stadium from December 12th to January 7th
  • Sleeping Beauty at dlr Mill Theatre from December 7th to January 7th
  • Olly, Polly and the Magic Lamp, 3Olympia Theatre from December 20th to January 7th

Christmas Decorations

In the run-up to Christmas, simply walking around the streets of Dublin is a magical experience. You see every street and shop window decorated for the season with some truly impressive displays from department stores like Brown Thomas and Arnotts. Overhead, there is a canopy of twinkling lights and decorations. There are dozens of decorated Christmas trees around Dublin with the main ones in Smithfield, O Connell Street and Grafton Street. Weir & Sons Jeweller on Grafton Street has an enormous mistletoe decoration, perfect for those romantic couples pictures. The cobbled streets of Temple Bar shine with over-the-top decorations of nearby pubs and the main buildings in Dublin are illuminated at night for a truly festive feel. Take a walk around the sights of Dublin after dark to experience the decorations in all their glory.

It’s not a Christmas miracle. DCU Rooms offer value accommodation in Dublin all year round! We look forward to welcoming guests, families, and groups from all over to share the magic of Christmas in Dublin with us.
