Christmas Shopping

Take a trip to the nation’s capital for a one-stop-shop for all of your Christmas shopping. Head to Grafton Street on Dublin’s South Side to find high-end department stores like Brown Thomas, stocking many designer names. Visit the nearby Stephens Green Shopping centre to find great Irish retailers like Dunnes and The Donegal Shop. If you like a more eclectic shopping experience, ramble the side streets checking out the designer and vintage boutiques dotted along Clarendon Row and Wicklow Street. Pop into Georges Arcade for a truly unique experience and to pick up something very special for someone you love.

On Dublin’s North side, take your time shopping on Henry & Mary Streets. You’ll find huge high-street names like Zara, River Island, H&M and of course, everyone’s favourite bargain brand- Penneys. You can visit shopping centres like the Jervis and the Ilac centre, both close to town. Closer to your home from home in DCU Rooms, you can venture to the close-by Omni Shopping Centre or take a trip out to Charlestown.

Events at Christmas in Dublin

Christmas is such a busy time in Dublin with events every night to keep you busy and entertained. Almost every venue in the city has a show over Christmas ranging from musicals in Bord Gais, to huge scale concerts in the 3 Arena. Theatres of all sizes host pantos, which are such great entertainment for young and old. A relative newcomer to the Christmas scene is Wild Lights in Dublin Zoo. Less than 20 minutes from door to door, Wild Lights takes place in Dublin Zoo and is a magical experience for all ages. Silk lanterns and statues are illuminated inside the zoo portraying a very special theme each year. Tickets are limited for this very popular event and accommodation fills up fast so don’t delay if you want to visit.

Christmas Traditions in Dublin

Each city has its own set of traditions that makes it a special place to visit over the festive season and Dublin is no different. A popular tradition is the switching on of the Christmas tree lights on both Grafton and O’Connell streets. Even if you miss the official switching on, it’s worth a trip to witness the millions of twinkling lights illuminating the streets while busy shoppers go about their business.

Busking has always been a popular pastime in Dublin, but Christmas brings out the very best talent in the country. If you’re lucky enough to be here on Christmas Eve, head to Grafton Street and enjoy performances by Irelands best musical talent – usually featuring Glen Hansard, Hozier, and Bono among others. Make sure to bring some change and donate to the charity they busk in aid of.

If you’d love to visit the city at Christmas, but don’t want to pay over the odds for a Dublin hotel room, book your stay in DCU Rooms. We’re looking forward to welcoming guests over the festive season to create memories and new traditions together.
